
KUALA LUMPUR: The services of Penang Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas has been extended for four more years.
Abdul Rahman, 71, received the appointment letter from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin at Istana Negara here yesterday.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng attended the ceremony.
Born in Kampung Permatang Rambai, Kepala Batas, Penang, Abdul Rahman was first appointed as the seventh Penang Yang di-Pertua Negri on April 17, 2001, and served another term from May 1, 2005.
Abdul Rahman, who is also Universiti Tenaga Nasional chancellor, was acting Penang Chief Minister from 1982 to 1984.
He left the teaching profession after 20 years to contest in the Bertam state by-election in 1977.
Abdul Rahman defended the seat in the 1978 general election and held it for four terms.
His political appointments included Penang Umno liaison committee secretary (1974 - 1988), Umno Youth executive committee member (1976 - 1978) and Kepala Batas Umno division deputy head (1988).
He is married to Toh Puan Majimor Shariff and they have four children
